The paying in slips were brought up to me to sign by Mr. Costa at approximately 10 a.m. yesterday.

I verified the amounts to be paid in with the total takings

as entered in detail in the Cash Book, examined all cheque s to see that such were in order, signed the slips and hamed

them back to Mr. Costa.

I am not aware at what hour the shroff proceeds to the bank or when he returns. He is not checked out or in by this

office.

The arrangement, so I am given to understand, is for the Radio Shroff to proceed to the Bank with the Post Office Shroff accompanied by a Chinese detective, and on his return to the Radio Office for the paying in slips to be forwarded to

this department for custody.

Normally the paying in slips are sent up to this office before 1 p.m., and are examined by me to see that they are correctly receipted by the Bank.

Recently, on occasions owing to the absence at Kai Tak of the Traffic Superintendent, who locks the daily takings up in his safe, the previous day's receipts are paid into the Bank with the morning's takings at 2.30 p.m.

Yesterday at noon approximately I was attending to Mr. Chen See of the Sincere Company in the Money Order Department and was engaged on other Money Order matters in the department till approximately 12.45 p.m.

I was not aware of the absence of the shroff till 2.40 p.m. when enquiries were made by this department in connection with the delay in forwarding the takings for the day to be

checked prior to payment into the Bank.

I was then informed by the Radio Office that the shroff

did not report back for duty at 2 p.m.

Action was immediately taken to trace the shroff.

The amount of cash handed to the shroff to pay into the

Bank yesterday morning was $2788.62.
